View Symposium for the Following Year:

2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2010

CSC Symposium:
The Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI) is hosting the session 'Recent Advances in Sustainable Chemistry' at the 100th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition (CSC 2017) meeting in Toronto on May 28 - June 2, 2017. This highly interdisciplinary session is in the Inorganic Division in collaboration with the Environment and Industrial Divisions. There will be 20 minute platform slots as well as posters.

The aim of this session is to provide a platform to discuss new cutting edge research in green chemistry, sustainable practices, environmental fate, and new non-toxic and biodegradable materials. We already have confirmed invited speakers across academia, industry and government, which can be seen here.

Green Chemistry Crash Course and Industry Case Study
We are also planning this Sunday event to be held on May 28 in collaboration with GreenCentre Canada (GCC). This is a great opportunity to learn more about green chemistry and apply it to a real example of developing a sustainable process. This is open to anyone interested and is free (including lunch) with registration to the CSC. You may register for the CSC 2017 here. To ensure your place please sign up ASAP as availability will be on a first-come first-served basis.

For Those Not Attending the CSC, But Want to Register for the Sunday Event
While this event is part of the CSC 2017, non-CSC registrants may also attend by registering for the Sunday event using the eventbrite link found here. The GCI will be covering the cost for these registrants to attend therefore there are a limited number of free spots available, so RSVP quick!

Sunday Schedule at a Glance
10:00 - 11:30 am --- Green Chemistry Crash Course. Presented by Laura Reyes, Green Centre Canada

11:30 - 12:30 pm --- Lunch

12:30 - 2:00 pm ----- Green Chemistry Case Study. Presented by Dr. Tim Clark, Green Centre Canada

2:30 - 5:00 pm ----- Career Discussion Panel and Coffee Mixer

Green Chemistry Crash Course:
A crash course focusing on the fundamentals of green chemistry, recommended for those who are new to green chemistry or need a refresher on the basics. Topics include: the 12 principles of green chemistry, green chemistry metrics, solvent and regent selection strategies, energy reduction, and waste management. Everyone is welcome!

Green Chemistry Case Study:
Starting with a brief lecture on the industrial and commercial deployment of more sustainable technologies, Dr. Tim Clark would like to show that green chemistry can be put into action on an R&D scale and that it is more than just a philosophy. He will then move to some technologies the GCC is currently working on or have worked on in the past. The participants will be broken into smaller work groups to address the questions and challenges the GCC has encountered in terms of de-risking technologies on both the technical and commercial side of industry.

Panel Discussion:
Prominent panelists, including representatives from Gilead and UBC, in the chemical sciences will discuss their career paths and answer audience questions. Attendees and panelists will have a chance to network at a post-panel coffee and cookies mixer, directly preceding the CSC 2017 Welcome Reception and Exhibition.
